Commemoration of Nostre Aetate
On October 28th 1965, the Second Vatican Council promulgated “The Church’s Bond with the Jewish People.” This historic declaration shifted the Roman Catholic Church’s theological teaching vis-a-vis non-Christian religions, which has had major implications for relations between the Roman Catholic Church, the Jewish people and Israel. It specifically renounced the centuries-old canard that the Jewish People collectively are a deicide nation, guilty of killing God — which teaching has led to a bloody history of anti-Semitism, including the Holocaust. Nostre Aetate affirms the Jewish roots of Christianity.
We celebrate the 40th Anniversary of that day in co-sponsoring the Monsignor John M. Oesterreicher Memorial Lecture with the Institute of Judeo-Christian Studies of Seton Hall University on Sunday October 30th 2005 in the Chancellor’s Suite, Bishop Dougherty University Center.
Attached is a more detailed flyer about the event. I hope you will join with other Jews and Christians in marking this extraordinary event.
