A new rabbi has been appointed to rebuild the Jewish community in the Polish city of Krakow, just a short distance from the site of the Nazis’ most infamous death camp.

Ruth Elkins reports

Avraham Flaks is a little grumpy this morning. “Sukkot, you know?” he says, intently stirring a large china cup of black tea. “One of the most important Jewish holidays and only seven people in the synagogue!” He will not be drawn further on the subject. He doesn’t need to be. His expression betrays lingering doubt in the Jewish revival here that he is supposed to be leading.
