DORTMUND, Germany — Israeli author Aharon Appelfeld picked up Germany’s prestigious Nelly Sachs Prize for literature on Sunday for his harrowing autobiographical stories of escape from the Nazis.

Appelfeld, 73, traveled to the western German city of Dortmund with his wife to accept the award, which was presented by the leader of Germany’s Jewish community Paul Spiegel. Full story.
