Protest proves educators have much to learn

Y our top story of Dec. 23, 2005, “Students protest Holocaust assignment,”revealed that New Hampshire has a lot of work to do to overcome intolerance.

The article explained that Harry Mitchell, an English teacher at Pittsfield Middle High School, had his eighth-grade students make arm patches with yellow stars, similar to those Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust, and wear them in school. His goal was to help the students gain empathy and the feeling of what it was like to have to identify yourself with a symbol.
