Holocaust survivor shares story

(January 6, 2006) — Students sat cross-legged and gathered close Thursday as Kurt Weinbach worked to speak loudly enough for all to hear how he survived the Holocaust.
Now 78, Weinbach said he was fortunate, as a child, to escape with his family from Austria to China with the help of his father’s friend, a Nazi soldier.
They were fortunate, Weinbach said, to avoid the slaughter of Jews and others targeted by the Nazis.
It was clearly a tough lesson for the nearly 30 fifth-graders in Tom Allen’s class at School 12 on South Avenue. MORE.
