I attended the first International Day of Commemoration in memory of the Victims of the Holocaust at the UN. (Adopted by the UN General Assembly under Resolution Number 60/70 on November 01, 2005 designating January 27 as an annual event.)

When the UN equated Zionism as a racist ideology they forgot their own resolution of 1948–when worldleaders bowed their heads in shame, and established the State of Israel–because of the evidence of the horrors of the Holocaust, when the world stayed virtually silent.

Finally in that place, there is a recognition of reality … And the realization that Israel must maintain it’s status as the Jewish homeland.

January 27 was chosen to be International Holocaust Remembrance Day as it marks the day Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated by the Soviet army in 1945. From this year forward, this world body will be reminded of why the existence of Israel is paramount. The safety of the Jewish people is a symbol of historical consequence.

Western civilizations pillars of civility and law came from our very ancient society and culture. We survived through the ages and remain vibrant as a people, the son’s and daughters of Israel … The Jewish people. Israel is our land and a promise to the world that “Never Again” will be a reality.

I carry the torch of remembrance, that of my family’s past, our home which was once Europe.
I heard the message of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan … “Never Again”
I heard the message of Brazil Ambassador to the UN Ronaldo Molta Sardenberg … Never Again
I heard Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Dan Gillerman … “Never Again”
I heard the missives/images of Holocaust survivors … “Never Again”
I heard the voices of the Zamir Chorale of Boston, Songs of the Ghetto’s and Camps … “Never Again.”

Most of all I heard Professor Yehuda Bauer who, on that day, instilled in me an undying embrace for “Never Again” to be a reality for all human kind.

As I look to this Nation and Israel I say loud and clear: No mother, no father, no child and no family should ever be decimated by the tyranny of an evil government. “Never Again!”
