20 February 2006 — Iran’s semiofficial Mehr News Agency says a website jointly organizing a competition of cartoons satirizing the Holocaust has received 14 million visitors during the past two weeks.

The site,, has so far posted some five entries in the competition. The contest was launched by Iranian newspaper “Hamshahri” and the website in response to a series of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published in a Danish newspaper and subsequently reprinted in a series of European publications.

The website has announced several awards for the winners, including a prize of $12,000 for the winner.

Organizers say they want to test the limits of the West’s freedom of expression.
