DAYTON, Ohio

A woman who helped Jews escape Nazis during the Holocaust and later was honored by Israel has died at 91, her family said.

Johanna Van Schagen told the Dayton Daily News in 1994 that she and her husband sheltered Jews out of anger toward Germans who were taking over their native Netherlands.

“We were afraid many times … there were lots of raids and if they had found them in your home, you would be taken to concentration camps, too,” she said.
