A big question looms over American Opera Projects’ premiere presentation of “Darkling,” which opened at the East 13th Street Theater on Tuesday night: What is it? The director Michael Comlish, who adapted the work from the book-length poem by Anna Rabinowitz, calls this 80-minute theater piece with music by Stefan Weisman an “operatic fantasia on themes of emotional fragmentation,” and I’m not sure I can better that description of this brave and sensitive though ultimately frustrating work.
