Berlin – Vienna to build Holocaust monument

By Oliver Bradley

A new memorial to Holocaust victims is to be built in Vienna following an architectural competition that attracted submissions from over 80 international firms.

A jury of 12 experts with a background in history, design and architecture awarded the first prize to the Fischer, Naumann and Partners and artist Kirstin Arndt.

The five top prizes went to German firms.

Vienna’s Memorial for the Deported Neighbours will be built at a railway yard that is currently being transformed by Britain’s star architect Sir Norman Foster. The city of Vienna stipulated that part of the railway yard should be set aside as a memorial park.
