Shortly after the Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors was formed in Philadelphia 55 years ago, its members held their first memorial service at the Jewish Community Center in Strawberry Mansion, where many of them resided at the time.

The service – which memorialized the loss of so many parents, siblings, spouses, children, extended family members who perished in the conflagration – was attended by association members only.

“We were alone,” recalled Abram Shnaper, the group’s longtime president.
