Holocaust survivor to speak in Astoria, Knappa

Holocaust survivor Alter “Alâ€? Wiener, who in his early teens spent nearly three years in five concentration camps, and who lost hundreds of close relatives – including his father, stepmother and stepbrother – will give several presentations in Clatsop County Monday and Tuesday.

Wiener, who also gave local presentations in 2002, attempted to flee to inner Poland in 1939 from his hometown, which was near the German border. The Polish retreating army ordered his father to stay behind to supply soldiers with provisions from his business. Wiener stood by two months later while his father’s partially decomposed body was identified by his stepmother, after it had sat in a pit with three dozen others left by the German army.
