Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum

There are victims and there are perpetrators. And there are those caught in between, simply trying to do what they can to help and to save their own lives. Trudy was only three when her mother Anna married Jack, an American soldier, at the end of World War II, and he brought them home to his Minnesota farm. Neither Jack nor Anna ever told Trudy about her real father. There was only the hidden family photograph of Anna, Trudy and an Obersturmfuhrer. Haunted by the implied guilt of her heritage, Trudy, now a professor of German history, commences an investigation of her past. This poignant and gripping story of two women’s struggles with the burdens and responsibilities of remembrance raises universal questions of shame, guilt, personal responsibility and love.
