To most people, it’s only a pull tab from a soda can – but not to Phylicia Mixon.

The Hamilton High freshman thinks about the horrors of the Holocaust as she moves about the school lunchroom, collecting dozens of stray tabs from the floor.

“Every time I pick one up, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, it’s another one who died or suffered,’ ” she said. “It’s a reality check.”

Mixon and her classmates in Lucee Buchanan’s English class have set a goal of collecting 6 million tabs, representing the number of Jews who were killed in the Holocaust.

They’ve got only 50,000 so far, but they plan to keep going for as long as it takes. Eventually, they will recycle the tabs – which they display in a hallway trophy case – and make a donation to the Holocaust Museum in Washington.
