Holocaust truths

May 19, 2006

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran is only one of far too many individuals who would like us to believe that the Holocaust never happened, that it was nothing more than a cynical contrivance designed to portray the world’s Jews as victims of unprecedented genocide.

The radical Iranian leader, who has called for Israel to be wiped off the map, should be required to take a trip to Bad Arolsen in Germany. There, in a former Nazi SS barracks, he could be shown the more than 47 million files – they occupy more than 16 miles of shelving – that provide irrefutable proof that indeed the Holocaust did happen. Regrettably, there’s no guarantee that Ahmadinejad would retract his absurd denials of the Holocaust, because these denials clearly serve his domestic political agenda. But he’d know the truth, and the rest of us would know he knows it.

Until this week, these files that contain the details of 17 million victims of the Nazi death camps and Hitler’s slave labor system had been made available only to the Red Cross International Tracing Service so it could pursue its effort to determine what happened to the millions of Jews and other “undesirables” (including Gypsies, homosexuals and the mentally impaired) who disappeared under Nazi rule.
