A holocaust memorial called “Wall of the True” (Igazak fala) erected in Budapest’s District XII without the necessary official permission may be demolished, daily Népszabadság reported on Wednesday.
The case offers a striking parallel with a statue of a bird (a turul; a favored symbol of Hungarian nationalists) also erected without permission in the same district, and which may be dismantled. The Igazak fala was completed in October 2005, one week before the turul statue.
A preliminary decision will be made in the case on October 15th. The public body in charge of permitting such monuments will make its judgment based on aesthetic grounds, after it receives planning documents from the memorial's creators. If it declines again to issue a permit, the city will probably order the memorial to be demolished.
