The President of Iran

Mr.Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Your Excellency,                                                                                     August 31, 2006

Re:   Your attitude toward the Holocaust

First of all, I would like to introduce myself. I, Noah Flug, was born in Lodz, a town whose population included a quarter of a million Jews before the war, and which today has only 300 Jews. The majority of the population was murdered in the Holocaust. Out of my whole family, numbering hundreds of people, I alone survived. As a child, I lived in Ghetto Lodz for four years, and then in the concentration camps of Auschwitz , Gross Rosen and Mauthausen. After surviving this inferno I discovered that my entire family had all been murdered.

I was elected to head the umbrella organization of all the organizations of survivors and victims of the Holocaust in Israel, and was also elected president of the Auschwitz International Committee, to which all former prisoners of Auschwitz from all over Europe and America belong, regardless of nationality or religion.

As one who survived the inferno and today represents thousands of Holocaust survivors in Israel , I do not know from where I draw the strength to write these lines to you.

Since you came to power, we at the Center of Organizations of Holocaust Survivors in Israel have been following your appearances and your racist statements, and the fact that you are a consistent denier of the Holocaust.  We have also taken note of the exhibition of racist caricatures currently on display in Tehran. We ask ourselves whether you are not aware of what happened, or whether you do not really want to know what happened?

You recently wrote a letter to the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel. According to your interpretation, it is possible that the Holocaust was invented by the allies at the end of World War II, in order to shame Germany .

This is not the first time that you have cast doubts on the fact that 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis.  In the past, you have even claimed that the Holocaust is a myth used to justify the establishment of the state of Israel .

In light of this, I have come to the clear conclusion that you are lacking in knowledge of the subject, and I would like to hope that you express yourself in this way as a result of your lack of knowledge, rather than malice. Perhaps the time has come for you to add to your knowledge of the subject.

For this purpose, I would like to invite you to visit the Auschwitz concentration camp together with members of the Auschwitz International Committee presidency, representing Polish, Czech, Hungarian, German, Austrian, French, Belgian, Dutch, British, American and other prisoners.

There we will be able to show you at first-hand how the Nazi extermination machine operated, killing over a million people, Jews and also non-Jews.

I am also certain that if you were to hear the appalling testimony of representatives of the Center of Organizations and the survivors, something in you might change.  Perhaps your hatred might be diminished, and we might, together, be able to promote peace.

Your government has also announced that it is holding an international conference on the subject of the Holocaust in Tehran in three months’ time, under the heading: ‘The reasons for anti-Semitism in Europe , the Holocaust and Zionism’.

I would appreciate being invited to head a delegation of Holocaust survivors from Israel to participate in this conference.  This would be an opportunity to hold a serious and pertinent discussion of the subject.

I am appealing to you as the leader of a large nation. Together with us, survivors of the Holocaust, perhaps we will be able to sow the first seeds of peace.

We, who have been through the horror, ensure that the victims are commemorated and that our story is passed on to the next generations so that there will never be another Holocaust, anywhere in the world.

We, lovers of peace, call on you to stop paving the way that will lead to another Holocaust.

Noah Flug

Chairman of the Center of Organizations of Holocaust Survivors
