Holocaust leads Some to keep Jewish ID Secret

© September 23, 2006 She posed as a Catholic schoolgirl to save her life in Nazi-occupied Belgium, but Kitty Saks has proudly declared her Judaism since the end of the Holocaust – and she said Sen. George Allen’s mother should have, too.
Henrietta “Etty” Allen said this week she and her husband hid her Jewish heritage to spare their son the fear she felt as a Jew in Tunisia when Nazis imprisoned her father during World War II.
“Why hide it?” said Saks, who lives in Chesapeake. “I can’t conceive that anyone wouldn’t tell their child they have Jewish ancestors.”
Jay M. Ipson, a Lithuanian Holocaust survivor and founder of the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond, said he could understand Henrietta Allen's choice, though he didn't agree with it.
