The evil of the Holocaust is so monstrous that it is hard to get your head around it. Six million dead. A million and half children gassed in the Auschwitz Second World War concentration camp alone.

How is it possible to come to grips with such obscene depravity?

That is why plays like Hana’s Suitcase, now playing as part of the Citadel’s KidsPlay series, are so important. They put a human face on unfathomable malevolence.

The fascinating and true story began in March of 2000, when a suitcase from Auschwitz arrived at the Children’s Holocaust Education Center in Tokyo.

The name Hana Brady, a birthdate of May 16, 1931, as well as the word “waisenkind” (orphan) were chalked on the outside.
