TORONTO – Former Ontario premier Bob Rae kicked off the 26th annual Holocaust Education Week with a lecture about the way Nazis systematically used law to oppress Jews before World War II.

Hundreds of people gathered at Beth Tzedec Congregation in Toronto last week to hear Rae’s lecture titled The Holocaust: From Rule of Law to the Nightmare of Oppression and Back Again, which described what happened to the rule of law in Germany after 1933 and explained how that kind of discrimination led to the murder of more than six million Jews.

The Holocaust Education Week opening night program coincided with the Toronto opening of the exhibit called Lawyers Without Rights: The Fate of Jewish Lawyers in Germany after 1933, which was sponsored by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies and runs until Nov. 12 at Beth Tzedec.
