Israel Deports 50 Sudanese Refugees to Egypt

Israeli authorities say they have returned to Egypt nearly 50 Sudanese refugees who illegally entered the Jewish state.

The officials confirmed Saturday’s transfer Sunday.

Israel says about 1,100 Sudanese have illegally entered the country from Egypt in recent years seeking jobs or political asylum. Most of the illegal immigrants are from Sudan’s troubled Darfur region.

Israel has said that people crossing the border illegally will be deported, but that genuine refugees whose lives are in danger may be allowed to stay.

Earlier this month, Egyptian police found the body of a Sudanese man beaten to death by suspected smugglers in a Sinai village. Police say human traffickers sometimes kill migrants who do not pay their fees.
