German – Jewish Dialogue: Tracing the Future – Different Perspectives
on a Shared Past

The weekend will give you an opportunity to meet young Germans who do
a one-year volunteer service program with ARSP around the U.S. In
addition to workshops and a museum visit, there will be time for
social interaction and the opportunity to exchange ideas and explore
the city together.

The weekend will start on Friday afternoon with an introductory
workshop. Afterwards, we will celebrate Shabbat together and have
dinner.

On Saturday, after Shabbat ends, we will organize a walking tour
through the Lower East Side and learn about the interesting history of
Jewish immigration to New York City.

On Sunday morning, we will visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage
together. We will start with a guided tour through the museum. After
lunch and some time to individually visit the exhibit again, we will
have a workshop on the influence of National Socialism on German and
American society after 1945. We will explore the differences and
similarities in how we perceive the historical information in the
museum. We all carry our own national, religious, and cultural
background, and we all bring specific historical knowledge.

During the weekend retreat, we will try to explore the different parts
of our individual backgrounds. The goal is not to find the “right”
approach to history, but to understand the complexity of our
historical heritage and to see how it influences our daily life and
our perception of the world. Through these discussions, we hope to
further our intercultural understanding within the German-Jewish
dialogue.
