As the sounds of sweet jazz floated over West 77th Street, and crafters sold their wares at a street fair right across the street from the restaurant where her memorial was being held, Isabella Leitner, (who, with her sisters, were the first Auschwitz survivors to set foot on American soil) was lovingly remembered by friends and family. One could not help but imagine her browsing among the booths along the fence of the Museum of Natural History, seeking out the most beautiful pieces of hand work.
