A HOLOCAUST survivor who led the Ilford Synagogue choir for decades has lost his battle against cancer aged 81.

Arthur Poznanski, of Wanstead Lane, Ilford, spoke at Holocaust Memorial Day in Valentines Park, Cranbrook Road, toured schools and was immortalised in the story of 732 teenage survivors called “The Boys” by historian Martin Gilbert.

The Polish-born Jew survived being shot by an SS guard thanks to a metal spoon left in his trouser pocket that deflected the bullet’s impact as he fled while being taken to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria.
