Irena Szumska-Ingram risked her own life and that of her family in Poland in World War II to help save a Jewish doctor from extermination by the Nazis. As soldiers herded thousands of Jews into the Tarnow ghetto in southern Poland in 1942, Mrs Szumska-Ingram hid Dr. Bernard Hellreich in her family’s tiny apartment nearby.
