A Columbia County auctioneer has pulled four Nazi items, including a flag and a ring, from a Saturday auction after receiving several complaints from people who found the items offensive to Jews. Those who flooded the owners of Meissner’s Auction Service in New Lebanon with calls and e-mails Friday said they considered Saturday’s sale of Nazi memorabilia exceptionally objectionable because Yom Kippur, a day of atonement and one of the holiest days on the Jewish calendar, began at sundown Friday.”We don’t promote Nazism,” said Dolores Meissner, who, with her husband, Keith, has operated the auction service for the past 22 years without ever encountering such a groundswell of protest. “I listened to everyone and they listened to me. They enlightened me and I think they came away understanding there was no malice on our part.”
