Kiev – Israeli President Shimon Peres on Thursday laid a stone from Jerusalem at a Ukrainian memorial to Holocaust victims. Rabbi Yaakov Bleich, leader of Ukraine’s Jewish community, also participated in a memorial ceremony at Kiev’s Babi Yar cemetery.Peres was in the former Soviet republic on a three-day state visit devoted to trade and cultural issues. He met with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Wednesday.Yanukovych and Peres later that day signed agreements for mutual protection of foreign investor rights, and for removing visa barriers to travellers.Ukrainian media has given strong coverage to the visit because of close ties between members of Ukraine’s Jewish community, and recent Israeli immigrants from the former Soviet Union.
