The news that Ireland’s new Government, in the wake of the Queen’s state visit to Dublin, is finally making belated amends and may apologize for the disgraceful persecution and blacklisting of some 5,000 Irish soldiers who chose to desert the Irish Army, leave their neutral nation in World War Two and fight in the British Army against Nazism, is welcome – even if it does come some seventy years too late to help the men themselves.
