When his mother, Miriam Kierr Kamenetz, was 10 in 1936, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz says she traveled with her parents to Lithuania to meet relatives there in a shtetl for the first time. It was an experience she would never forget. “She would never see them again,” Kamenetz said of his mother, who passed away in 1980. “Five years later, the Nazis entered Lithuania and all of her family was killed.” In fact, he pointed out, 96 percent of Lithuanian Jewry was decimated, the highest percentage of any European Jewish community.
