Raoul Wallenberg, who saved thousands of Hungarian Jews in 1944
Swedish humanitarian worker Raoul Wallenberg is credited with saving tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews from deportation to Nazi concentration camps during World War II. But after Soviet troops took control of Budapest in 1945, he was arrested and never seen or heard from again.

On what would have been his 97th birthday, August 4, the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation brought together survivors rescued by Wallenberg to renew the call for Russian officials to unseal the record of his fate.

The fatal shooting at Washington’s U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum two weeks ago is a grim reminder that white supremacists and Holocaust deniers are dangerous fanatics — domestic terrorists, if you will. The assailant James von Brunn’s hatred for Jews and African-Americans was fueled by the vitriol he spewed out on his Web site and that he absorbed from similar internet sources. “The Holocaust is a lie,” he wrote in a note found in his car after the attack. “Obama was created by Jews.”

I do not know whether Patrick J. Buchanan’s official Web site was one of von Brunn’s regular haunts, but it easily could have been.

Buchanan is a former senior White House official in the Nixon and Reagan administrations, erstwhile arch-conservative candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, and now a highly paid political commentator on MSNBC. He is also a patron of Holocaust deniers.

Students at Palo Verde High School will have a chance next school year to help reunite families separated by the Holocaust.

They’ll do it by assisting with the analysis of DNA samples from Holocaust survivors. And they’ll aid in the creation of a virtual memorial, envisioned as a Facebook-style social networking site that could help survivors, separated by distance and generations from long-dispersed relatives, look for links in shared histories.
It’s a chance for students to experience the real-world applications of the concepts they learn in the classroom as they partner with the University of Arizona’s DNA Shoah (Holocaust) Project.
